We hand-gather this scrap from the rubble piles of our quarry in Maryland's Peach Bottom slate country along the Susquehanna, where Welsh quarrymen split slate by hand in the 1800s. It's hand-split blue-black slate, often with warm rust tones, and no two boxes are alike.

6+ pounds of mixed scrap slate pieces, mostly 2–8 inches, in random shapes

Choose your thickness: Thin (1/4–1/2 in), Medium (1/2–1 in) or Thick (1–2 in).
